F.A.Q.
How soon should I contact you to secure your birth doula services?
I recommend reaching out as early as possible to ensure my availability for your “due” date. This also allows us to build a strong relationship and for me to assist you with finding a care provider, if desired. Many clients come to me at the beginning of their 2nd trimester but earlier or later is also welcomed.
Do you only attend homebirths?
I attend all births including hospitals, birth centers, homebirths, and freebirths and am well-versed in the local options for families.
Do you only support women planning an unmedicated birth?
While I tend to attract clients who are planning unmedicated and low-intervention births, I also support mothers who are open to or planning to get an epidural or even moms who may need a cesarean. I have been considered a tremendous asset in all of these scenarios and the support you receive throughout your pregnancy is unmatched.
What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
The main difference is that a midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care and is trained to deliver a baby. A doula is not a medical professional and is more of a birth coach that provides you with informational, emotional, and physical support. Both provide you with care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
What specific techniques or strategies do you use during labor?
I am well-versed in a variety of techniques that provide pain management and comfort measures, encourage labor progress, assist with optimal positioning for the baby, make space and balance tissues for easier pushing, support your labor flow state and emotional wellness, facilitate cohesion with your complete birth team and so much more. I tune into what you need and act accordingly.
Are doula services covered by insurance?
Coverage for doula services varies by state and insurance plan. It is best to check with your insuarnce provider. Additionally, many expectant parents use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover doula fees.
You will need a letter of medical necessity provided by your doctor to show that the costs of a doula are a true medical expense. I can also provide you with a Superbill with my NPI # and Diagnostic Codes for possible insurance reimbursement.
I have a partner supporting me. Do I still need a doula?
Doulas support the whole family and by doing so reduce the stress both you and your partner may feel. I am a complement to the loving and secure support your partner provides.
Sometimes it is difficult for partners and even family and friends to know how to help you during this time. Partners will often be relieved to have some support, guidance, clarification, and reassurance on the areas they aren’t familiar with.
Together, your partner and your doula make a harmonious birth team.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. I understand that financial planning for your birth is essential. I offer flexible payment plans up to 36 weeks of pregnancy to make doula services accessible to you.
